Awake: The Dark Night of the Soul
A sad alien eats a magic mushroom trying to escape from all his problems but he suddenly starts a psychedelic trip to self knowledge.
This film explores the somewhat hidden and overlooked realm of fungi. With relaxing , immersive visuals, the viewer is asked to consider how little we know about the world with the fungal kingdom as a prime example. In making this film I wanted to show people their inherent connection to nature, from the feeling you get watching butterflies in the forest to considering that your own body is an ecosystem. This film inspires curiosity and love for the land and the other sentient beings who live here with us.
Mila Garelle-Essam has been walking in the woods and meeting fungi since she could count her age on one hand. When she attended Colorado State University to study Conservation Biology she was appalled to find that fungi were completely left out of her education. In response to this she started a mycology club at the school and found such a great interest that a student film organization she was working for asked her to also make a film about these intriguing beings. Mila recently graduated in May of 2025 shortly after the release of her film and hopes that this work will inspire conversation and curiosity in the lives of those who choose to watch it.
